A bachelor's degree in engineering, information technology, or computer science is a requirement for the field. Even more important than academics is the hands-on knowledge and experience, especially for roles that carry more responsibility. An infrastructure engineer must be able to configure a network from scratch, which requires specific knowledge of basic applications and hardware components of computer networks.
Professional certification is often a benchmark for employment, but will allow three years or more of experience in lieu of the certification.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills are vital to the profession. Other than dealing with issues related to a company's IT infrastructure – internet connection, routing, servers -- engineers may also be responsible for ensuring that phone lines are functional at all times and tackling any problems if and when they arise.
